Architecting Secure Identity: Extending Auth0 PrivateLink with Intelligent Gateways
Summary
Auth0 PrivateLink provides a single private connection, which can be challenging for enterprises needing to route traffic to multiple isolated VPCs like staging and production. The "Intelligent Gateway" pattern solves this by deploying an API Gateway or reverse proxy at the PrivateLink termination point to fan out traffic based on context added by Auth0 Actions.
- Auth0 PrivateLink establishes a single, private, unidirectional connection to your cloud infrastructure.
- Enterprises often require routing Auth0 traffic to multiple isolated VPCs (e.g., Prod, Staging) from a single Auth0 tenant.
- The Intelligent Gateway pattern uses an API Gateway or reverse proxy at the PrivateLink endpoint as a fan-out layer.
- Auth0 Actions can append context (e.g., custom headers, path segments) to requests for the gateway to use in routing decisions.
This pattern is critical for large enterprises using Auth0 that need to maintain strict network isolation and complex routing to different environments while centralizing identity management.
