Build durable applications in Rust: the Temporal Rust SDK is now generally available

Summary

The Temporal Rust SDK is now generally available, enabling Rust developers to build durable, fault-tolerant applications with native APIs for Workflows and Activities. It manages execution state, retries, and recovery for long-running processes.

  • The Rust SDK provides native APIs for Workflows and Activities using async functions, structs, and procedural macros.
  • Workflows must be deterministic, using SDK primitives for timers and concurrency instead of direct Tokio or std library calls.
  • Activities handle external I/O and side effects; they should be idempotent as they may run multiple times.
  • A runtime nondeterminism detector is included to help identify violations in Workflow code.

Rust engineers building complex, long-running, and fault-tolerant distributed applications can now leverage Temporal's state management and reliability with a native SDK.

The Copilot agent runtime was rewritten from a 130‑k‑line TypeScript/Node.js codebase into a native Rust library (~830 k lines of Rust) to reduce startup latency, memory use, and improve reliability. The migration was done incrementally (in‑place) across 128 PRs, with AI‑generated code handling most of the work. The new runtime exposes a C ABI for in‑process embedding by all six Copilot SDK langu…
